Community

The work we carry together.

These communities helped shape me. They gave me teachers, friends, correction, encouragement, and places to belong. Service is one way I return that care. Brotherhood, faith, mentoring, and movement remind me that connection goes both ways.

Culture & belonging

National Society of Black Engineers

NSBE made technical achievement feel like a collective effort. At RIT, I worked on academic support, corporate relationships, chapter records, and youth STEM outreach while learning how to become a better student myself. That experience still shapes how I teach: ask questions early, practice a method, and make room for someone who has not found their confidence yet.

Brotherhood & service

Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated

I joined Iota Phi Theta in 2011 through Pi Omega in New York. Today I serve Omicron Omega in Richmond as treasurer and webmaster, following earlier Vice Polaris service. Chapter-building, advising, and mentoring taught me that leadership includes preparing someone else to make the next decision. Meeting packets, chapter history, calendars, and handoff notes are practical parts of that work. The brothers give me friendship and accountability as well as responsibilities.

Coalition work

National Pan-Hellenic Council of Metro Richmond

Coalition work taught me the value of clear communication and dependable relationships. As a webmaster and digital-support volunteer, I have helped Divine Nine organizations communicate across different traditions, protect relationships, and show the public what cooperation can look like when our shared purpose matters more than any one organization.

Mentoring

Mentoring and Professional Development

At Third Street Bethel, I have co-led young men’s mentoring with other adults who bring their own experience and care. Elsewhere, a conversation may begin with a résumé, an interview, or a goal that still feels too big to say aloud. I ask people to explain their choices, practice the next step, and recognize what they already bring. Mentoring also keeps me teachable. A younger person’s question can expose an assumption I stopped noticing.

Culture & belonging

West African Drum and Dance

From Rochester to Albany and Troy to Richmond, West African drum and dance has helped me understand community through the body. Rhythm is listening, timing, memory, discipline, and joy practiced with other people. It connects cultural expression with listening, discipline, and shared joy.

Movement, joy, wellness, and intergenerational connection.

Culture & belonging

Break It Down RVA

Line dance gives people a reason to move, laugh, learn, and come back. In Black community spaces, that kind of intergenerational connection matters. Break It Down RVA reminds me that wellness can be social, movement can be memory, and leadership sometimes looks like helping the person beside you find the count.

Faith

Third Street Bethel AME

Third Street Bethel is my church home in Richmond. Worship, volunteer service, youth support, and the steady work behind the scenes connect faith to everyday responsibility. Media ministry is one way I contribute, helping people participate from wherever they are.
